Types of Spherical Optics
Spherical lenses sometimes referred to as singlets, are optical elements with a curved surface. This curved surface is typically spherical, comprising a segment of a ball, which is manufactured with a specific radius of curvature.
There are two main types of spherical lenses: concave and convex. Concave spherical optics have a thin central portion with a thick periphery, while convex lenses have the opposite.
At Optimax, we routinely produce both types of spherical optics for a wide range of imaging applications. Different formats we manufacture include:
Concave
Convex
Specifying Spherical Lenses
The first step in specifying an optical sphere is choosing the material, and the second is selecting critical mechanical attributes. These include: thickness, typically center thickness (CT); a diameter, often the outside diameter (OD); and surface radii. Ultimately, the goal is to fabricate a spherical lens with finely toleranced mechanical attributes which yield high optical performance with minimal cost. At Optimax, we utilize cutting-edge metrology tools and profilers to ensure optimal transmission, wavefront distortion, and light scattering properties.
